Aftercare Guidelines
- Avoid brushing, flossing, or waterpiking at the surgical site until your doctor lets you know that the area has healed properly.
- Refrain from moving or pulling your lips to view the surgical area, which may unintentionally disrupt your healing process.
- Do not touch the surgical area with your finger or any device. Avoid licking the surgical area, too, or touching it with your tongue in any way.
- Avoid sleeping with your hands under your cheek until the surgical site has fully healed.
- Refrain from playing wind instruments, snorkeling, or scuba diving for six to eight weeks following oral surgery.
- Try not to chew directly at your surgical area. Avoid hard, sharp, and crunchy foods altogether, and try to chew only on the other side of your mouth.
- Avoid using straws or spitting. These activities may cause additional bleeding or loosen your surgical grafts.
- Avoid tobacco or marijuana products for six weeks following surgery.
- Do not wear mouth guards or other appliances unless cleared to do so by your doctor.
- For the first 48 hours after surgery, apply ice to the cheek near the surgical site, aiming for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
- Steer clear of exercise or strenuous physical activity for three to five days after your oral surgery.
- Expect some cold sensitivity, which may last for up to six weeks after surgery.
Bleeding
You can expect a little bleeding or oozing for the first 24 hours after surgery. Usually, you can stop the bleeding by applying gauze or a tea bag. If bleeding continues after the first day or so, call our office.
Swelling and Bruising
Anticipate some mild to moderate swelling and bruising. These symptoms usually peak around day three and may last for three to four days. These symptoms should be resolved within a week or so, and if they are not, contact us directly.
Gum Grafts (From Palate)
For the first 48 hours, try to apply ice (or cold foods, such as popsicles) to the roof of your mouth as much as possible. Doing so can ease swelling and expedite healing.
Take Medications
Take all medications as prescribed. If you experience symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea, contact our office.
A special consideration for women: Be aware that oral birth control can sometimes interact adversely with oral antibiotics. You may wish to use supplemental forms of birth control until you have completed your course of antibiotics.
