Procedure Bone Regeneration

The loss of a tooth is often accompanied by the loss of bone. With no natural or artificial root to stimulate the jaw, you may experience bone atrophy and unwanted changes to your facial appearance. Through bone regeneration, our practice can help you regain bone where you need it most, preparing you for further dental restoration. Venice Periodontics & Implant Dentistry is pleased to offer bone regeneration to our patients in the Venice, FL community.

What Is Bone Regeneration?

When you have inadequate jaw bone, it complicates dental restoration, as there is no place to secure the implants in place. This is an especially common concern among patients who lose teeth and do not have them replaced promptly, leaving the jawbone to atrophy.

Bone regeneration may be performed with a sample of your own bone tissue, tissue from a bone bank, or even artificial tissues made to resemble natural bone. By carefully grafting them into place, we can stimulate further bone growth where you need it the most.

When Is it Needed?

Bone regeneration may be necessary whenever you lack sufficient bone structure for safe, secure implant placement. This procedure may be performed at the time of a tooth extract, preserving your socket for eventual implant placement, or it may be performed in conjunction with the implants themselves.

Benefits of Bone Regeneration

Bone regeneration can be advantageous for a number of reasons, including:

  • Prevent unwanted changes to your facial appearance.
  • Lift the sinuses, making you eligible for dental implants in your upper jaw.
  • Promote a safe and successful dental implant procedure.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your treatment journey begins with an initial appointment, allowing us to evaluate your teeth and jaw and determine what type of bone graft you need. On the day of your surgery, you will be placed under anesthesia, ensuring your comfort and well-being. The bone regeneration process is sometimes done as a stand-alone procedure but may also be done at the same time as your dental implant placement, helping minimize your time spent in surgery. This is an outpatient procedure, and once you are awake again, you will be discharged to rest and heal at home.

Comfort and Recovery After Your Treatment

Following your bone regeneration, we recommend taking about a week to rest and recover at home. During this time, you can anticipate some soreness and swelling, both of which can be addressed with over-the-counter or prescribed medications. We also recommend sticking to a soft foods diet for the first few days of your recovery, gradually shifting back to your normal diet as you feel able.
